Tell me about your regular practice area: Where do you practice and what do you do? What do you love most about your job?

I am a senior associate at Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP where I practice in the areas of consumer litigation and complex business litigation, including lender liability and dealer/distributor/franchise disputes.  I enjoy seeing a matter from inception to completion.  I am able to consult with my clients on specific matters before the issue ripens in to a lawsuit and then also defend my clients in court or arbitration.

What is your favorite pro bono experience?

My favorite pro bono experience to date would have to be the Frontline Health Planning Project. This pro bono experience offered by the Pro Bono Resource Center provided me with the unique honor of supporting North Carolina frontline healthcare workers during the height of

the pandemic. More specifically, I helped healthcare workers and their families with crucial legal matters by preparing legal documents, such as a Health Care Power of Attorney and Living Will, which provided security and peace of mind for healthcare workers as they cared for COVID-19 patients.

Tell me about your experience with Pro Bono Resource Center projects.

I have served as a volunteer on several projects with the Pro Bono Resource Center. I assisted with the Housing Stability Project where the goal was to preempt eviction of residential tenants by helping landlords and tenants reach an agreement that was beneficial to both parties. I also assisted with the Driver’s License Restoration Project where I was able to help provide relief to individuals who had their driver license suspended for minor charges due to unpaid court fines and fees that they were financially unable to pay. I also assisted with the COVID-19 Frontline Health Planning Project by helping prepare legal documents, such as a Health Care Power of Attorney and Living Will, for frontline healthcare workers during the height of the pandemic.

How has pro bono volunteerism enriched your career?

I don’t get a chance to work with a lot of non-business clients, so working directly with individuals who are not speaking on behalf of their employer, provides a change of pace for me that is much appreciated.

Of what moment(s) from your pro bono work are you proudest?

I am most proud of my work with the COVID-19 Frontline Health Planning Project.  In my volunteer role, I was able to support North Carolina frontline healthcare workers during the height of the pandemic.  More specifically, I helped healthcare workers and their families with crucial legal matters by preparing legal documents, such as a Health Care Power of Attorney and Living Will, which provided security and peace of mind for healthcare workers as they cared for COVID-19 patients.

What advice would you give to attorneys who have not yet provided any pro bono service?

Please do it!  Even if you can only devote a few hours to pro bono, it surely is rewarding work.
