COVID-19 has caused a great deal of distress and upheaval in our state, and your neighbors need your help! Legal Aid of North Carolina is expecting to need assistance with a large number of COVID-19 related issues starting June 1. The areas of law in which we are anticipating the most need are employment and wage claims, housing, consumer and collections, and issues regarding the Family First and CARES Acts. Due to the seriousness and complexity of these kinds of issues, we are asking volunteers to provide over-the-phone legal advice, and brief services such as negotiation or demand letters. There are also opportunities for extended services such as representation and litigation.
For evictions due to COVID-related loss of income, we are asking volunteers to negotiate with landlords for tenant relief. This relief may be in the form of rent abatement, a rent repayment plan, longer time to look for alternative housing, or other tenant protections.
We provide staff mentor support throughout the length of a case, free CLE trainings, and malpractice insurance for issues referred through our programs for all of our volunteers.
