Volunteer pro bono attorneys are needed to address the legal needs of North Carolinians impacted by the tornado that swept through the Greensboro area on April 15, 2018. The NC Young Lawyers division, in partnership with FEMA, the ABA’s YLD, NC Emergency Management, Legal Aid of NC and the NCBA YLD Disaster Committee, has established a toll free line for requests for legal help for disaster related problems. Calls are screened and referred to volunteer attorneys who agree to offer a phone consultation. The types of legal assistance available to survivors include: • Assistance with appeals of FEMA and other benefits available to disaster survivors; • Assistance with life, medical, and property insurance claims; • Help with home repair contracts and contractors; • Replacement of wills and other important legal documents destroyed in the disaster; • Assistance in consumer protection matters, remedies and procedures; • Counseling on mortgage-foreclosure problems; and • Counseling on landlord-tenant problems. It is anticipated that the largest needs will relate to insurance, landlord-tenant and FEMA issues. Volunteer attorneys with experience in these areas are especially needed but training is provided if you don’t have experience in this area.
