SUMMARY:Pro Bono Representation in Juvenile Parole Review
DESCRIPTION:The Juvenile Parole Project is a collaboration between the UNC School of Law Pro Bono Program and NC Prisoner Legal Services\, Inc. and supported by a grant from the NC Bar Foundation. The Juvenile Parole Project partners two law students with a volunteer attorney to provide representation to a currently incarcerated client eligible for parole. Eligible clients were convicted of offenses that occurred prior to age 18 and prior to 10/1/94. The volunteer attorney and students work with the client to gather information and records\, meet with the client in person at least once\, prepare materials for the Parole Commission\, present at a 30 minute meeting at the Parole Commission in Raleigh\, and assist their client with a videoconference meeting with the Parole Commission. Cases are typically assigned about 5 months prior to the Parole Commission meeting\, and there is no expectation of continued service or representation. Attorneys attending the CLE will be asked to join our volunteer list and volunteer for a future case at their convenience. No criminal law experience is necessary to volunteer.
