DESCRIPTION:As part of PLI’s commitment to public service and the pro bono activities of the legal community\, there is no fee to attend this program. \nWhy You Should Attend\nUsing a lively\, interactive format\, this program will examine everyday issues of ethics and professional responsibility in pro bono and public interest practice. \nWhat You Will Learn\nWithin the context of pro bono representation\, using “all-new” hypotheticals as the basis of discussion\, this program will review how to handle ethical issues concerning: \n• Who is the client?\n• Confidentiality\, conflicts of interest\, and attorney-client privilege\n• Limited scope representation: how it works for both firm and in-house counsel\n• Representing clients with diminished capacity \nWho Should Attend\nAll attorneys working in nonprofit organizations and legal service organizations\, as well as those involved in pro bono practice in law firms and corporate legal departments.

Practical skills – from preparing and examining witnesses to creating the record and introducing evidence – will be addressed. \nWhat You Will Learn \nOverview of forums\nRequesting hearings\nLocating and preparing witnesses\nPreparing your case\nUsing evidence\nStatements and briefs\nStriving to have your administrative proceeding resemble a legal proceeding\nCreating the record and looking toward a possible appeal\nUnderstanding Article 78 proceedings and judicial review\nBest practices and strategies\nWho Should Attend \nThis program is designed for pro bono\, legal services\, and public interest attorneys who provide representation for low income-clients involved in government benefits-related administrative proceedings\, including cases concerning public assistance\, social security\, unemployment insurance\, entitlement to special education services\, and housing assistance\, such as Section 8 or public housing. If you are currently handling or are interested in handling an administrative hearing on behalf of a pro bono or low-income client\, you will benefit from this program.
