\"Sylvia<\/a>Sylvia Novinsky
\nDirector

Sylvia K. Novinsky is the Pro Bono Resource Center\u2019s inaugural director.\u00a0 Sylvia is tasked with supervising all of the Pro Bono Resource Center\u2019s activities including serving as a clearinghouse for pro bono projects across the state, managing pro bono reporting and recognition, facilitating impactful pro bono projects which directly serve North Carolinians who would not otherwise have representation, uplifting the work of legal aid and other legal non-profits, coordinating trainings and CLEs for attorney volunteers, and recruiting and connecting volunteers directly to projects.<\/p>\n

Sylvia comes to this role after nearly twenty years of service to the University of North Carolina School of Law, where she most recently held the role of Assistant Dean for Public Service Programs. During her tenure at Carolina Law, Sylvia founded and advised the UNC Law Pro Bono Program, a national model for inspiring students and alumni to participate in pro bono service. She has also served as the institution\u2019s Associate Director for Public Interest Law, Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, and Associate Dean for Student Affairs. Sylvia also spends time inside the classroom as an adjunct professor, teaching \u201cSpanish for American Lawyers\u201d and \u201cLeadership for Lawyers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Prior to her work in higher education, Sylvia worked as a legal aid attorney. After law school, Sylvia litigated federal employment-related issues and administrative unemployment, wage and hour claims, and consumer cases, for Peninsula Legal Aid in Virginia. She then served as Legal Director for the Center for Immigrants\u2019 Rights in New York, New York, where she supervised a statewide hotline for immigrants and advocates and represented domestic workers on employment matters.<\/p>\n

Sylvia grew up in Queens, NY, and is from Argentina. She is a graduate of Cornell University\u2019s School of Industrial & Labor Relations and The American University\u2019s Washington College of Law. She is licensed to practice law in Maryland, the District of Columbia and New Jersey. She is a member of the N.C. Bar Association serving on the Pro Bono Activities Committee,\u00a0the Minorities in the Profession Committee and the Government and Public Service Section. She volunteers with the Fairfield Summer Swim Team and is a member of Judea Reform Congregation in Durham. She lives in Durham, with her husband, who teaches at Durham Public Schools, and her daughter.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Anh LyJordan
\nHousing Stability Project Manager
\nanh@ncprobono.org<\/a><\/u><\/h3>\n

Anh LyJordan serves as the Project Manager for the Housing Stability Project with the Pro Bono Resource Center. In this position, Anh manages a program of volunteer attorneys with an aim to increase housing stability by providing income-based assistance to North Carolina\u2019s most vulnerable tenants, who are in imminent danger of eviction due to the COVID-19 pandemic, while providing property owners with alternatives to eviction through the HOPE program.<\/p>\n

Prior to joining the Center, Anh spent over 25 years working in the field of employee and labor relations \u2013 first at Nabisco where she had the pleasure of working amongst cookies and crackers at several Nabisco bakeries in Philadelphia, New Jersey and the Bronx before attending Rutgers School of Law in Newark, New Jersey. After a stint with a NYC big law firm, she moved to the DC area, where she spent ten years as a trial attorney with the US Department of Labor litigating cases on behalf of American workers. The LyJordan family relocated to Raleigh in 2017 so that Anh could create Accelerate The Climb \u2013 an organization dedicated to helping first-generation college students transition from college to career.<\/p>\n

Anh was born in Saigon, Vietnam and came to the US with her family in 1975. She grew up outside of Buffalo, New York and attended Cornell University as a first-generation college student, graduating with a degree in Industrial and Labor Relations. She currently lives in Wendell, NC with her husband, two teenage sons and black Labrador Wilbur.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Meghan Martie
\nStaff Attorney

Meghan Martie serves as a staff attorney with the Pro Bono Resource Center focusing on driver\u2019s license restoration. Meghan oversees pro bono volunteer work and communicates with clients.<\/p>\n

Prior to joining the Resource Center, Meghan spent two years volunteering part-time as an attorney with the Wake County Office of the Public Defender, representing clients in District Court. She also clerked for Justice Robin Hudson on the Supreme Court of North Carolina for four years.<\/p>\n

Meghan grew up in Raleigh, spent her undergraduate and law school years in D.C., attending Georgetown University and the Georgetown University Law Center, and then found her way back to Raleigh after law school graduation. She and her husband have two young boys and in her (infrequent) spare time, Meghan enjoys reading, running, and dancing.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Rachel Royal
\nParalegal Consultant
\nrachel@ncprobono.org<\/a><\/u><\/h3>\n

Rachel is a Certified Paralegal through both the National Association of Legal Assistants (NALA) and the North Carolina State Bar. She holds an AAS in Paralegal Technology from Carteret Community College. She has held positions with the NCBA Paralegal Division as a Council member from 2018-2021, a Pro Bono Co-Chair since 2018, and Secretary for 2021-22.<\/p>\n

Prior to her work with the Pro Bono Resource Center, Rachel worked in family law, insurance defense, and municipal law, while serving as a pro bono volunteer and project coordinator for the Paralegal Division. She opened her own freelance business, Royal Touch Legal & Business Solutions, LLC, in 2020. She has been a paralegal consultant for the NC Equal Access to Justice Foundation as a pro bono coordinator for the Commissions\u2019 Driver\u2019s License Restoration Project since January 2021, and for the Housing Stability Project since October 2021. She lives in Wilmington, NC with her husband and two boys.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>B. Leigh Wicclair
\nSenior Staff Attorney
\nRestorative Justice Project Director
\nleigh@ncprobono.org<\/a><\/u><\/h3>\n

Leigh Wicclair serves as the Pro Bono Resource Center\u2019s Senior Staff Attorney focusing on driver\u2019s license restoration and relief from the collateral consequences of a criminal record.\u00a0 Leigh conducts attorney trainings, coordinates pro bono opportunities for attorney volunteers, and works on policy issues.<\/p>\n

After law school, Leigh worked as a public defender with the Defender Association of Philadelphia. She then worked as an Equal Justice Works\/ AmeriCorps Legal Fellow with Philadelphia Lawyers for Social Equity, a nonprofit focused on expungement and increasing opportunities for individuals who have had contact with the criminal justice system. Following her fellowship, Leigh worked as a Judicial Law Clerk for the PA First Judicial District Court of Common Pleas.<\/p>\n

Leigh was born in Asheville, NC, raised in Lewisville, NC and is a proud double Tar Heel. She enjoys spending time with her family, running, and playing soccer.<\/p>\n

Milton Barba
\nContract Spanish Language Attorney

Milton was born and raised in Ecuador and speaks Spanish fluently. Milton worked as a pipe welder and utility foreman for 14 years until he lost his job due to the Great Recession. At the time, the construction industry was struggling and he knew he needed to change careers. Looking for guidance, Milton remembered all the help he had received when his livelihood was threatened. He sought a career where he could give back to the community and became a paralegal. In 2020, Milton graduated from NCCU School of Law.<\/p>\n

Milton opened The Barba Law Firm in early 2021, where he handles traffic tickets, misdemeanors, workers\u2019 compensation, and personal injury cases. Milton\u2019s understanding of the construction world\u2019s intricacies and his intercultural communication abilities are assets for his clients. His goal is to build his practice to the point where he can represent clients regardless of their ability to pay.<\/p>\n

Milton comes to the PBRC with an awareness that many North Carolina drivers have lost their licenses for financial reasons, and he looks forward to using his legal knowledge and language skills to help the Driver\u2019s License Restoration Project serve more individuals who need help.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
