However, from the new\u00a0attorney who may be apprehensive about signing up for a pro bono opportunity to the veteran practitioner who can&#8217;t find the time to volunteer, there are valid reasons that lawyers may not prioritize meeting Rule 6.1&#8217;s aspirational goal. Nevertheless, there are some equally great reasons to prioritize pro bono legal service as part of your\u00a0law practice:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">1.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s2\"><b>Clients Need Our Help!<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0Every year, roughly 80% of the civil legal needs of the poor in North Carolina go unmet. These needs, such as addressing\u00a0housing habitability violations, protecting victims of\u00a0domestic violence, ensuring\u00a0access to health care or combating wage theft, may seem less pressing than those in the criminal courts, but to a person living in poverty, legal redress can mean avoiding homelessness, violence or even death.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">2.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s2\"><b>Service Provides Professional Development!<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0While addressing unmet legal needs in our state, participating in pro bono legal service also benefits\u00a0you as a practitioner. Whether expanding your professional network by volunteering at a legal clinic or building your competency in new areas of law, volunteering can help you become a better lawyer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">3.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s2\"><b>There Are Opportunities for Recognition!<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0A lawyer who reports at least\u00a050 hours of pro bono legal service in a given calendar year will be inducted into the NC Pro Bono Honor Society and receive a certificate from the Supreme Court of North Carolina recognizing that achievement.<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">4.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s2\"><b>It Feels Good to Give Back!<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0As North Carolina attorneys, volunteering is a way to invest in our own communities in a way that we are uniquely suited to provide.\u00a0Whether seeing firsthand the difference you made\u00a0in a client&#8217;s life or feeling as though you made a true impact in protecting another&#8217;s legal rights, pro bono legal service is incredibly rewarding.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s3\">5.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s4\"><b>Volunteering Is Easy!<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s3\">\u00a0Finding a pro bono opportunity is as simple as viewing the <u><a href=\"https:\/\/ncprobono.org\/dev\/volunteer\/\">opportunities posted on this website<\/a><\/u>.
